Long Island Exposition – Version 2: Frictionless “Card on File” for Upsells with Stripe + WooCommerce
This post is a follow-up to our Version 1 build recap: How we built and optimized the Long Island Exposition website for a seamless boat show experience. Version 2 focuses on a major checkout improvement: securely saving a customer’s payment method by default and with clear consent- so the client can bill for post-purchase add-ons without chasing cards.
Why a Version 2?
The situation: Long Island Exposition frequently needs to bill customers later – think add-ons, upgrades, or show-specific services purchased after the initial checkout. In Version 1, card-on-file depended on customers noticing and ticking a small “save payment method” box. Many didn’t, which meant manual outreach and payment friction.

The goal: Make “card on file” the standard outcome of checkout – securely, transparently, and with the customer’s informed authorization, so future charges are smooth and predictable.
What We Changed
- From checkbox to clear consent.
We replaced the easily missed “save my card” checkbox with a concise Card-on-File notice positioned near the Place Order button. Consent to store and later use a payment method is captured through the existing Terms & Conditions agreement. Customers know the card will be saved securely and may be used for add-ons they approve. - Mandate for off-session charges.
At checkout, customers agree that their payment method can be charged later for specific scenarios (add-ons, upgrades, post-order services). This up-front authorization, often called a mandate, enables compliant off-session charges when the customer isn’t actively on the site. - Saved during the first payment.
Rather than asking customers to store a card separately, Version 2 saves the payment method as part of a successful purchase. That initial, authenticated transaction helps future charges go through with fewer hiccups. - Customer control is built in.
Saved payment methods remain securely stored with the payment processor (tokenized; never on the website server). Customers can view or remove them any time in My Account → Payment Methods. - Operational clarity for the client.
We documented when it’s appropriate to charge off-session, how to notify customers ahead of a new charge, and what to do if a bank requests additional authentication (e.g., send a one-time payment link).
How We Implemented It
Behind the scenes, we used hard coding to make checkout behavior consistent with the consent model above, i.e., when a purchase succeeds, a valid payment method is saved to the customer’s account for approved future use. We’re intentionally not publishing code in this post; the emphasis here is the experience design, consent language, and operating guidelines that make the flow both effective and respectful of customers.

The Consent Language (Example Copy You’ll See at Checkout)
Card on File – By placing this order, you authorize Long Island Exposition to securely store your payment method with our payment processor and charge it for add-ons, upgrades, or approved post-order services related to your purchase. You can remove your saved payment method any time under My Account → Payment Methods. We’ll notify you before any new charge.
Why this matters: If you plan to charge later, be explicit about what you might charge for, when/how you’ll notify the customer, and how they can revoke consent or remove a card. This isn’t legal advice, but it’s a solid UX pattern that aligns with major payment-provider guidance.
Trust, Security, and Customer Control
- Tokenization & storage. The site never stores card numbers. Payment details are handled by the processor and referenced on the site by tokens.
- Customer control. Customers can remove saved methods at any time in their account area.
- Off-session charging etiquette. Notify customers before charging for something new, keep descriptions clear on receipts, and make refunds/adjustments straightforward.
- Authentication readiness. Saving the method during a successful purchase improves the odds that future off-session charges succeed. If a bank requires extra steps, your team can trigger a quick, one-time authentication flow.
- Documentation. We provide internal SOPs covering acceptable use cases for charging later, notification templates, and dispute-handling checklists.
Results We’re Seeing
- No more chasing cards. Add-on billing is now a simple admin action because a valid, authorized payment method is already on file.
- Faster fulfillment of late add-ons. Teams can act immediately instead of waiting for payment.
- Happier customers. Clear language up front and easy payment-method management reduce surprises and back-and-forth.

FAQs
Do you really remove the checkbox?
Yes, we remove the tiny “save card” checkbox to reduce ambiguity. Instead, we present a clear, readable Card-on-File disclosure tied to the Terms & Conditions agreement. Transparent language beats hidden options.
Is this secure?
Yes, Card data is handled by the payment processor and represented on your site by tokens. Your site never stores raw card data.
Can customers opt out later?
Absolutely. They can remove saved methods anytime in My Account → Payment Methods. We also recommend notifying customers before any new charge.
What happens if a later charge fails?
Sometimes a bank requests additional authentication. In that case, your team can send a quick pay link or prompt the customer to authorize the charge, an edge case we plan for in the SOPs we provide.
